Shadow; Muyeong's yongma, which he can summon to battle

A yongma (or mythical beast) is a creature that often acts as a helper and companion for a specific chachaoong. The power to control a yongma is an inborn skill which not all chachaoongs possess. Most yongmas introduced thus far seem to have a humanoid form (though some have a beast-like form as well) and none appear to be capable of speech. Some yongmas have personalities and are capable of independent thought and action, while others are little more than tools to be used by their chachaoong.

And just as it is unheard of for chachaoongs to be twins, it is also unheard of for two yongmas to be the same or have the same abilities.

Abilities[]

The abilities (and personalities) of yongmas vary as much as those of the chachaoongs. Often, however; their abilities are reflective of their form. Muyeong's, for example, is a shadow, and often travels with him as such. Yongmas are usually at their master's side, but some can freely move about if they wish. For this reason they are sometimes used as scouts or used to relay messages to other people. They are often capable of transformation and interacting with the human world, though to what extent may be limited to their abilities. Almost all have some kind of physical form, though there are exceptions, such as the yongma of Hanarin, which is in spirit form only.

Though some yongmas are capable of communicating with gestures and the like, none have been shown to be able to speak (although Shadow and Shade have been seen growling and making other non-verbal vocalizations).

Notes[]

The following is supplemental information about the TAL universe via the Twitter bot 탈 정보전달봇 (TAL Information tranmission bot) (@in_tbot).

  • A yongma's appearance can be changed, but not its unique abilities.[1]
  • A yongma can become more powerful, but it does not grow larger. Its external appearance can be changed according to its master's will.[2]
  • A yongma and its master are "born" together, and they die together. Until its master dies, a yongma cannot die; but when it suffers a great blow, it disappears for a period of time.[3]
  • When its master dies, a yongma also dies. A yongma's master is permanent, and a yongma cannot be transferred to someone else.[4]
  • The sclera (white of the eye) of yongmas is black.[5]
  • Yongmas may appear to be male or female, but in reality they have no gender.[6]
  • A yongma's name is given by its master.[7]
  • The strength of a yongma is inversely proportional to the strength of its master.[8]
